Where the pavement ends and the Best begins
Pueblo people describe this site as part of their migration journey. Today you can follow their ancient passageways to a distant time. Explore a 900-year old ancestral Pueblo Great House of over 400 masonry rooms. Look up and see original timbers holding up the roof. Search for the fingerprints of ancient workers in the mortar. Listen for an echo of ritual drums in the reconstructed Great Kiva. The main archeological site is a large ancestral Pueblo Great House with over 400 rooms. Many people think it was built for ceremonial or social purposes.
To reach Aztec Ruins National Monument and explore the site via a national parks service guided tour can be scheduled on a half day tour. However, surrounding areas of unexcavated Indian ruins are available for exploration and offer many opportunities to get outside of the known boundaries and possibly discover ancient structures, petroglyphs, and artifacts that have remained undisturbed for centuries and only seen by those willing to make the effort. Overnight camping at the national park facility is within the city limits, therefore, restaurants and stores are easily accessed. Motels and restaurants are available in the towns of Aztec and Farmington, New Mexico.
